"To create one's own world in any of the arts takes courage."
-Georgia O'Keefe
Artist's
Biography
Christina DeMers was born in Albany, New York, but was raised in New York City, where at an early age she was exposed to the city's many cultural offerings. Her artistic aspirations began at the
age of seven, when she first attended art classes at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Christina later went on to focus her concentratation on oil painting and illustration in college,
and also began to participate in juried exhibitions. She graduated from the State University of New
York with a Bachelor's Degree in Studio Art, and a minor in Art History.
After earning her degree, Christina went a period where did not pick up a paintbrush at all. However, she found herself lost without her longtime passion and eventually came back to painting. Upon her re-emergence Christina branched out into new areas, most notably, Watercolor, which quickly became her medium of choice. This led to a period of experimentation resulting in the signature 'dry-on-dry' technique that now dominates her work.
Having decided to settle in the Capital Region in the mid 1990's, Christina began taking advantage of exhibiting opportunities in the area, participating in a variety of arts shows, from the Annual Fence Show at the River Front Arts Festival in Troy, where she won an Award in 1999, to local galleries, like the Albany-based Canterbury Gallery, and at coffeehouses and bookstores, like Uncommon Grounds and Barnes & Noble.
Christina
also began to achieve recognition on a larger scale through freelance work, having had two designs published by a greeting card company headquartered in N.J., and designing CD cover jackets for local and international music personalities.
Currently, Christina lives and paints in upstate New York's Hudson Valley.

Artist's Statement
After a life-long interest and involvement in the arts that has included years of art classes, frequent visits to museums and galleries, and an almost constant pursuit of my own 'potential', I have embraced my artistic destiny, becasue I love to paint, and I cannot not do it.
My style, although representational, I do not consider traditional - I have tried to push the boundaries with bold use of color and unexpected perspective and positioning.
I have come to the conclusion that for me, painting is about the pure and simple goal of creating something beautiful. And within beauty lies the striking, the intense, the dramatic, but never just the dangerous, the offensive, or the shocking.
Nature is one of my most powerful inspirations, and I try to do my best to do it justice. There is no shortage of subjects, there is no way to finally and completely render a subject found in nature perfectly... it provides a constant and engaging challenge.
I have accepted that challenge, and this is what drives me as an artist.
